Herbie died suddenly in his sleep when he suffered a seizure (a problem related to his early diving years)on board a vessel in Norwegian waters.June 4th 1907. ' Tinker tailor soldier sailor, when he grows up what will become Of this bonnie golden headed boy? The paths he walks will take him far And though his time here won't be long It will be filled with love and joy. The life and soul of any 'Do' He'll be the one to see us through .......And now he's gone we feel him near, Still his voice is loud and clear "On yonder hill there stood a coo, it must hae gone for it's nae there noo". Forever in my thoughts Mum.

I remember Herbie and Amanda from their days of living here in Bramham West Yorks. We met at a social event and found we had lots in common, especially the love of motor bikes. A couple of times we rode through Leeds at a high rate of knots, with Herbie's Harley scattering all aside such was our progress. He owned a shop in the centre of Leeds called Bootleggers and sold upmarket, would you guess, boots. I still have a pair of nice handcrafted Spanish ones I bought from him. Many of the local bars knew him well and no doubt they could tell a story or two about Herbie as he certainly loved a drink and would bond with anyone in the bar. Around 2001 he sold his house in Bramham and bought a smaller one in nearby Wetherby as he was about to return to diving after an enforced layoff after his diving accident. In the meantime he and Amanda were planning their wedding on some exotic island in the West Indies and as Herbie was offshore again Amanda was to work in France at their apartment in a ski resort over there. I remember speaking to him one time in France when he expressed his delight at getting back into the diving saddle and he invited the wife and I over to France for some skiing and hang gliding (another of his loves) time. Unfortunately I had a bike accident in 2002 followed by a serious illness and couldn't follow up on the invite. I called the apartment a couple of times a few years later but had no reply. I assumed he and Amanda had moved somewhere else in the world and maybe someday we'd re-establish contact.
From this blog I now know what has happened to Herbie. I did wonder many times over the years as I got back into bike riding and now ride a Harley of course, and still remember our times on the bikes and in the Leeds bars and Bramham top pub.
Herbie was a real character - without doubt.
My best wishes to Amanda and Herbie's family.

I was just looking around on the Internet for characters I had met over the years, wondering what they are up to now. Sadly found this blog. Very sad to hear of Herbie's demise. I met him over 25 years ago when he was staying with a diving colleague, who lived opposite us. I remember him showing me the nasty scars on his leg, a legacy of the accident. He seemed to be game for anything with an element of risk, so I shouldn't have been surprised when I saw him in this programme about Eddie Kidd a few months later! https://youtu.be/sknQpLsYd-Q
RIP Herbie.
